Planting Trees
Adding to a Green Canopy
A number of Step trees, with the botanical name antiaris toxicaria lesch, have been planted in the Jaekel House garden the month of May. They were donated by Legacy Trustee and Past President Mr Desmond Majekodunmi, They are a small contribution to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) project launched in 2015, a unique network of forest conservation initiatives, which involves all 54 countries of the Commonwealth.
It is also related to the Queen’s Green Canopy, which complements the QCC and has seen people across the UK and Commonwealth “Plant a Tree for the Platinum Jubilee”, marking 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, as well as her headship of the Commonwealth.
The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy presents an opportunity to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests. By creating a pan-Commonwealth network of forest conservation projects, the QCC aims to conserve indigenous forests for future generations. Nigeria is among list of committed countries mentioned on the QCC website and the two Nigerian projects are IITA Tree Heritage Park and Kawari Forest Reserve.
