Brazilian Temple Under Threat
Terreiro da Casa Branca, one of the oldest African religious temples in Bahia, is under threat from illegal construction next to it, putting the temple at risk of collapse. Casa Branca has national historic heritage and as no government action has been taken to protect it a petition has been set up on AVAAZ to save this important site of Afro Brazilian historic and religious memory and other Candomble communities at risk. Two Yoruba freed women Iya Nasso and Marcelina da Silva were C19th Candomble priestesses, who had been enslaved in Brazil and believed to be closely linked to this temple associated with the Xango diety.
