Who is this stockfish trader?
Who can confirm the identity of the Nigerian man in this picture, taken on the market in Bergen, Norway? A Norwegian researcher is diving into the history of the stockfish trade. His research has led to Nigeria – one of Norway’s biggest countries of exports for the product – and he is looking into the story of a big Nigerian stockfish importer. All he knew was the name Alhaji Mohammed Ade Kasumu.
Further research by Legacy led to the hypothesis that it might be the same person as Chief Ade Kasumu aka Oyinbo Oni Panla. He was from Ijebu Aiyepe in Ogun State, just like Obafemi Awolowo, who was a friend and comtemporary of his. Anybody who knows more about this important trader, kindly send an email to Legacy’s Research Secretary Femke van Zeijl at research@legacy1995.ng.
