Who We Are

Legacy | The Historical and Environmental Interest Group of Nigeria, is a registered non for profit organisation run by volunteers. Legacy unites people interested in the common cause of promoting and preserving the character and appearance of Historic Monuments and the Environment and Cultural Entities in all parts of Nigeria, through which the history and culture of Nigeria can be promoted. Legacy was officially registered in December 1995.

Legacy is a membership organisation with a Board of Trustees and Patrons. An Executive Committee of volunteers carries out the regular activities. We promote knowledge and raise awareness about our activities for both adults and children and provide a recorded legacy for future generations.

To do this, Legacy organises workshops and events connected to Nigeria’s heritage and facilitates research on a broad range of heritage related topics. Legacy seeks to raise funds for research, conservation and restoration projects and for the maintenance of the historic sites in our custody.

What We Do

During the past 25 years, Legacy has had many highlights and achievements. We successfully organised historic tours to Lagos Island, Epe, Badagry and Lekki Peninsula as well as further afield to Ibadan and Osogbo. We organised seminars and exhibitions about topics such as Nigeria’s Brazilian connection and the influence of the railways on the country’s history.

We produced measured drawings of important buildings such as the now demolished National Monument Ilojo Bar, and published booklets and a map of historic Sites in Nigeria. Legacy also restored the historic Jaekel House and Gardens in the historic Railway Compound in Ebute Metta in Lagos, which is the seat of our organisation.

We have been fortunate to form many partnerships with government organisations, including the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, other NGOs and the private sector.
